Insurance Coverage And Cosmetic Procedures: Is Anything Included?
14 July 2011Whether or not insurance covers the cost of cosmetic surgery is not a yes or no question. In most cases it will not, but there are certain situations in which your insurance provider will pay for the procedure. The major determinant in whether or not your insurance will cover the costs of cosmetic surgery depends on the necessity of the procedure.
For the most part, an insurance policy will not cover cosmetic surgery if the procedure is purely a cosmetic procedure, meaning it is being done only for appearance purposes. On the flip side, if the surgery is being performed for reconstructive purposes, your insurance policy will cover a portion, and depending on the severity and need for the surgery, will cover the entire procedure. The main example that would be considered reconstructive is a breast reduction surgery, in cases where the patient is suffering from chronic pain. However, a surgery which is purely being done for “the looks aspect” will most likely be declined by your insurance provider.
Insurance companies are required by law to pay for surgeries, at least in part, if they are reconstructive procedures, invovling health risks in patients. But, if purely cosmetic, most insurers won’t pay up.
